Well, here is what looks like the second to last official OMD Newsheet, I did mention this fact in the Convention magazine and it is sad to think that Jan and Mike will no longer be doing the news sheet, they have both become very good friends of mine, and I know that they will miss the contact that they have had with all the fans. As long as there are fans out there, I am sure that there will always be a hard core of followers who will want to know what Andy and Paul are doing, what there projects are, and will they continue to make music. I will try my best to keep you all up to date with information as and when I get any, I will also work close with Pat Fetty to help keep his news section up to date. Sadly I have so little time these days with my work and other projects that I am involved with, so I can not dedicate a fixed amount of time to do the updates, but keep a eye on my site, and who knows what you will see next !!!!
| Hi everyone! I thoroughly enjoyed attending the OMD
Convention in September.Because of work the next day, I
had to leave at the best bit, that is, the disco. The quality of the music, along with the
presence of some of those who loved it,combined to say, "Well, here's the
legacy!" - I had to be dragged away!At last, you have a newsheet; sorry for another
delay but we were waiting for all the latest news directly from Andy himself... ...
. "What have I been doing in 1997? I've been writing songs for a girl group that myself and a management team in Liverpool have put together. Since the group was actually formed, in July, the plan has altered somewhat. It became increasingly obvious to me that I cannot write conventional pop songs for a girlie group; so myself, Stuart Kershaw, Pete & Ken from the management team, and Paul Humphreys have all begun working towards a band that has a rather weird sound, made of disparate musical ideas, samples and anything strange that takes our fancy. We are trying to create a hybrid pop sound for the new millenium - very catchy, but also very odd.The band consists of:- Jo Jeffries, Heather Leigh, Joanne Mannion and Rebecca Rudd.Jan Carr (who did some TV work with OMD last year) is involved in styling and choreography and may end up joining the band as well. There isn't a name as yet.It has been quite strange and often hard work to get other people to sing mysongs. I am so used to singing on my own and knowing the way I would do it myself. I am, however, optimistic about the project. As for OMD matters, I have delayed writing this newsletter until I had some concrete facts to tell everyone. There will be an OMD complete Hit Singles Collection - to be released world-wide in Spring 1998. Virgin has set a date of March 30, though these things usually get delayed. But unless there is a major problem, the record will be out before summer. After much consideration, myself, my management and Virgin agreed that if 'Walking on the Milky Way' was not a big hit, it was difficult to imagine me writing an even better song to lead the compilation campaign. Also, given the reluctance of Radio 1 in Britain to play anything by OMD, it would probably be a waste of time. However, the idea that everyone liked was that of remixing some of the classic singles like 'Electricity', 'Enola Gay',etc. In the past I have always been against this. I know that people usually like their favourite songs to be left alone. The plan is that the album will hopefully be divided into two discs. One CD will contain 18 or 20 songs in their original form and mix and then a second CD will contain all the remixes - we hope to have as many as possible to make this really worth buying. The double pack will probably be limited to 6 months, and then the CD will become a single disc item for the future simply containing the original tracks. If I could arrange it, I should like to include one totally new track on the extra CD, as most of you reading this, and many other people who have long supported OMD will already have most of the tracks in one form or another. I will do interviews to promote the record. We will have to wait to see how the re-mixes turn out before we assess which track might be available as a single, to be played on the radio. Like it or not, Virgin feel that a remix by some trendy remixer of 'Enola Gay', for example, stands a better chance of chart and radio success than a totally new song. Reluctantly, I have to say that I agree with them, but it is perhaps also an opportunity to prove to people who don't know, or have forgotten, that our early songs were an important part of the history of electronic music. So these re-mixes are a way of helping people to reasses the songs. This, so far, is the plan. As for a video for the single, we will have to see... TV appearances: again, we will have to wait and see. Touring will also have to wait, but I am not against the possibility of a short farewell tour.I would be interested to hear all opinions - so please write. PS I've tried Virgin with the idea of a 'B' Sides CD, but they won't go for it ! Proposed Track List for Disc One : Electricity; Messages; Enola Gay; Souvenir;Joan of Arc; Maid of Orleans; Talking Loud & Clear; Locomotion; Tesla Girls; So in Love; Secret; If You Leave; Dreaming; Forever Live & Die; Sailing on the 7 Seas; Pandora's Box; Call my Name; Dream of Me; Walking on the Milky Way.'Maybe's' : Telegraph; Stand Above Me; Genetic Engineering. It will be obvious to most of you that this is the 1988 Album plus five or six new songs, but it is important to me that it is a complete collection for the future- OMD's Epitaph. Finally, HELLO to all of those fans I met at the OMD Convention in Liverpool at the end of September. I had not intended to be involved, but since Paul Browne, one of the organisers, said it could be the last of these gathering, I thought I would take the opportunity to say hello. As anticipated, the questions were poignant and interesting, and I really enjoyed meeting everyone ! The next Newsletter, ( probably the last one from the Info Service) in early Spring, should confirm everything about the Compilation Album. Bye for now..." Andy YOU ASK. ANDY REPLIES. 1. "Where was the 'Souvenir' video shot, and what happened to the Karman Ghia featured in it ?" (Will Nedley, Glasgow.) "It was shot in the park at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, and also at the Stowe School. The red car belonged to Peter Savile, our long-time sleeve-designer; he also directed the video. He sold the vehicle not long after the filming." 2. "Will there be any live concerts available on video in the future ?" (John Adam, Balloch.) "No plans for any. It is possible that Virgin will release a compilation video for next year's definitive collection." 3. "As a cello player I am fascinated by the song 'If You're Still in Love With Me'. Any chance of being able to buy the sheet music for 'Universal'?" (Eberhard Erich, Germany.) "Sorry. There are no plans for this to be available." 4. "Could I know the exact time, date and place of your birth, Andy,as I am an astrologer and I would love to be able to do your chart ?"(Cherry Holt, Boston, Lincs). "I believe I was born at 10:30 am, June 24th, 1959 in Heswall Maternity Clinic,Wirral." 5. "What is your favourite music at the moment, and what do think of Oasis ?' (Fiona Pereira, Portugal.) "Fave music at present is Portishead, Sash, Mulu (a band from Liverpool)write some good tunes, though I'm not a huge fan. 'Wonderwall' was my favourite." 6. "You mentioned your children in a recent newssheet. Can we have any details of them ?" (Anna de Gouveia, S.Africa.) "My kids are a daughter called Charlotte and a son called James." MEMORIES OF THE OMD CONVENTION. September 27th. 1997. Liverpool. England - by PAT FETTY. (See also on website:http://www.omdweb.com/-fester/convent. htm) "It was the trip I'd been looking forward to for months, possibly the trip of a lifetime, and it couldn't have been any better. All I could think about on the 13-hour plane ride was the OMD Convention and what might happen over the next few days. Upon arrival at Manchester International I finally got to meet Neil, Paul and Chris in person... The days leading up to the event were crazy around Neil's house. Neil was trying to run his business while answering calls from fans arriving from all over the world ! ... Once at the hotel, I met a load more fans and friends - Carmen,Mike Whelan, Paul Turner, Matthew Greenway; everyone was so excited. The first event was the South Africa Concert Video (filmed 1994 in Johannesburg). It was the best show I've ever seen on tape !... In the afternoon came the 'mystery event'. We actually walked from the Hotel to the Pink Museum (Andy's Studio), went inside, and there was Andy McCluskey IN PERSON !!?! He answered all the questions very graciously. I finally got to say: 'Andy, my name is Pat Fetty and I've come all the way from America for this...' He shook my hand and said: 'It's a pleasure to meet you, Pat.' Then he told everyone what a great web site Pat's World of OMD was ! Obviously, meeting Andy provided the best two hours of the whole thing, for everybody. But later we still had: Merchandise, Dinner,'The Messerschmidt Twins', OMD Karaoke, Disco... Then on Sunday the trips to visit special OMD places... It was a time I will NEVER forget, and an experience that would never have been possible without the hard work of Neil (Taylor) and Paul (Browne)." N.B. Convention Video available early '98 - contact Neil Taylor, 74 Wood Lane,Timperley. Altrincham. Cheshire. WAl5 7PL England enclosing an SAE for details. OMD INFORMATION SERVICE, PO Box 16, Windermere LA23 1GB PLEASE NOTE: The scheduled November '97 Newsheet will now become Spring '98.This will be the last one and anyone who has paid for further newsheets will be reimbursed.I shall be very sad to be finishing the Information Service, although it has always been a struggle, as you will have noticed, to produce the newsheets on time. As no further work is being produced under the band name, this is a natural time to wind things up ('though it does feel rather unnatural!) The Internet will soon be accessible to all for updates on news of Andy - it certainly seems to have drawn OMD fans together from all over the world! "Compiled" magazine and updates still flourishes - for more details, contact Kevin Pretlove or lan Hayter,75, Lypiatt Road, Redfield, Bristol. BS5 9HP Meanwhile, have a Happy Winter! Best Wishes, Jan.
