First Album

The First Album

The first album by Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, will last for ever as far as the hard core of OMD fans go. Such classics as messages and Electricity will be gems that every OMD fan will cherish. Maybe, to some extent singles like Messages, changed the way that some of us listen to music, even to-day.
But the whole album, was a breath of fresh air, and was a part of a turning point in British music.
For myself, Messages has stood the step of time and is still my favourite track.
The tracks on the first album are
BUNKER SOLDIERS
ALMOST
MYSTEREALITY
ELECTRICITY
THE MESSERSCHMITT TWINS
MESSAGES
JULIA'S SONG
RED FRAME/WHITE LIGHT
DANCING
PRETENDING TO SEE THE FUTURE

Architecture & Morality

ARCHITECTURE AND MORALITY

Some would say the height Of OMD. This may be true in many ways and the album is full of classic hit singles. The music flows and blends from one track to another. It was released in 1981 and for those of us around at the time it was an album that everyone had to have a bit like say "Dare"
The tracks on the album are
THE NEW STONE AGE
SHE'S LEAVING
SOUVENIR
SEALAND
JOAN OF ARC
JOAN OF ARC (MAID OF ORLEANS)
ARCHITECTURE AND MORALITY
GEORGIA
THE BEGINNING AND THE END
Maybe for the wrong reasons all the non OMD fans know Enola Gay. In 2001 a dance version of the track was released and it got as high as number 5 in the club charts.

Dazzle Ships

Dazzle Ships..

A errr different album that was to be the down fall of OMD. As far as commercial success this was a disaster. But for many for the die hard fans the album is a classic. Songs such as Telegraph and International are so far apart but yet so close. Where songs like Timezone are well, just there.
The album came out in 1983 and here are the tacks on it:
RADIO PRAGUE
GENETIC ENGINEERING
ABC AUTO INDUSTRY
TELEGRAPH
THIS IS HELENA
INTERNATIONAL
DAZZLE SHIPS (PARTS II III & VII)
THE ROMANCE OF THE TELESCOPE
SILENT RUNNING
RADIO WAVES
TIMEZONES
OF ALL THE THINGS WE'VE MADE

But was the cover to this album a board game..?

Junk Culture

Junk Culture

I think that Junk Culture took many fans by surprise, but that said, that was and is, the art of OMD. A brand new sound that some loved, and other hated. A touch away from the synths that were noted to be OMD, but a new direction. Nothing wrong with this, and from this point OMD proved how they could take a new directions as times changed.
Tesla Girls, a song that had backgound proved to be a hit, while other songs like Hard day, were full of emotion for that period in time. Many people hate Love and Vilonce but was this just the way of the time?
Talking Loud And Clear, another hit was a track that that was mellow, and when OMD preformed live was just a little stop gap to get your breath back.
 Here is the track listing.
JUNK CULTURE
TESLA GIRLS
LOCOMOTION
APOLLO
NEVER TURN AWAY
LOVE AND VIOLENCE
HARD DAY
ALL WRAPPED UP
WHITE TRASH
TALKING LOUD AND CLEAR

Crush

Crush...
Now was this diverse? Once again for many fans this is one of those albums that is always played. Was it because of the BBC coverage which has to be a climax as far as a running record of where the band was at that point in time.
Yet more hits from the album followed. SO IN LOVE - SECRET although LA FEMME ACCIDENT did not do that well. It was a shame in my view that HOLD YOU was never released as a single its pure silk.
So it was in 1985 that Crush was given to the world. A classic OMD sleeve as well.
Here is what is on the album.
SO IN LOVE
SECRET
BLOC BLOC BLOC
WOMEN III
CRUSH
88 SECONDS IN GREENSBORO
THE NATIVE DAUGHTERS OF THE GOLDEN WEST
LA FEMME ACCIDENT
HOLD YOU
THE LIGHTS ARE GOING OUT
The song 88 SECONDS IN GREENSBORO was on the BBC programme and the footage that was shown will shock anyone.

The Pacific Age

The Pacific Age

Album number 7 The Pacific Age as was now the norm another new look and direction. But the band was having problems and was soon to split.. happy and sad times for all.
(FOREVER) LIVE AND DIE was to be the main hit from the album. As the end of the 80's took place OMD was soon no longer to be the band everyone knew.

Here is on the album.
STAY (THE BLACK ROSE AND THE UNIVERSAL WHEEL)
(FOREVER) LIVE AND DIE
THE PACIFIC AGE
THE DEAD GIRLS
SHAME
SOUTHERN
FLAME OF HOPE
GODDESS OF LOVE
WE LOVE YOU
WATCH US FALL
Some fans have even said that the song WATCH US FALL is about the fall of OMD I doubt if this is the case.

Sugar Tax

Out of the blue came Sugar Tax for many fans the thought of a new album had become a dream but here it was SUGAR TAX. Everyone loved it, the tour was great the videos to the singles great. 1991 saw OMD back! SAILING ON THE SEVEN SEAS and its tribal feel to PANDORA'S BOX OMD were back..

Liberator

Liberator

1993 was to see the Album Liberator after all the joy of Sugar Tax LIBERATOR was doomed to be a flop. Had OMD sold out by only doing gigs in the arena's ? So many questions to why?
But this album was in a way another Dazzle Ships. A great same as tracks like CHRISTINE and BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES are nothing short of brilliant.
Here is what was on the album...
STAND ABOVE ME
EVERYDAY
KING OF STONE
DOLLAR GIRL
DREAM OF ME (BASED ON LOVE'S THEME)
SUNDAY MORNING
AGNUS DEI
LOVE YOU HEAVEN IS
LOVE YOU AND HATE YOU

Universal

Universal

A more mature album that came out in 1996 UNIVERSAL had it all. But for one reason or another it just did not take off, a great shame as for myself I think this is one of the better albums. OMD had grown up and the feelings in many of the songs showed this.
Walking On The Milky Way had everything to be a hit single but it did not happen.. This was the end.
Here is what is on the album
UNIVERSAL
WALKING ON THE MILKY WAY
THE MOON & THE SUN
THE BLACK SEA
VERY CLOSE TO FAR AWAY
THE GOSPEL OF ST JUDE
THAT WAS THEN
TOO LATE
THE BOY FROM THE CHEMIST IS HERE TO SEE YOU
IF YOU'RE STILL IN LOVE WITH ME
NEW HEAD
VICTORY WALTZ

Does the song "THAT WAS THEN" say so much or is it just me ?
