VH 1 Interview 24/8/98
Hits
re is what was said on the interview with Andy and Paul on VH1 on the 24/98
P.H - OMD started out
as a hobby and we did not start out with all these big ideas of being Pop stars and have
this big master plan of being famous or anything, we were just going from one thing to the
next. OMD was only going to be One concert at Eric's Club in Liverpool, that was all it
was going to be, but the audience did not particularly like us, but the owner did.
A.M - So screw you we are
coming back again.
A.M.- If someone had said
in 1978 , "yea Two guys and a Synth that's going to be the next big thing", no
one would have taken us serious. But as it turned out, Two guys and a Synth became a kind
of blue print for the way a lot of bands were in the 80s.
A.M.- I suppose
effectively I am responsible for doing this (The Singles Collection) as Paul had left the
band 10 years ago, and Paul has come back to talk because more than half the songs on this
album are his babies too. It tricky to strike a balance on this album because over the 30
years, certainly in the UK market we had 30 hit singles, but not all of them do we still
like any more, we have grown to dislike a few of them quite frankly.
We just wanted to condense it down and say, 18 on one record and people should be able to
remember all of these. You buy greatest hit albums and flick through them, and get to the
6 or 7 track and say "don't remember that one, don't remember that one, don't
remember
that one" and em, hopefully that is not going to be the case with this record.
P.H .- Really there is a
lot of songs that I really love and believe in here, I mean some of the earlier ones maybe
particular maybe songs like Messages, its the first time that we had actually had a top 20
hit, and the whole excitement that surrounded that.
A.M.- I have had a great
time, he sounds like he had a great time.
P.H. - I had a great time
to.
A.M. - Em, its time to
stop. Definitely stop O.M.D. because it limits the possibilities, but there is no reason
why certainly I am not going to do musical things in the future, and Paul is going to do
musical things in the future, and we might even do things together.
P.H.- Yea
A.M.- But not as O.M.D. I
mean in kind of 5 years time if we are still going as we can be the Plant and Page
of Synth pop.
So in a nut shell that was all that was said, the interview did show various video clips from Messages through to Sailing On The Seven Seas. Paul and Andy looked relaxed and did a lot of smiling. For me it was kind of weird to see Paul and Andy doing a interview together, but on the other hand they looked like what they used to be, Paul started the interview, but Andy soon took over, just like the olden days !!!!
